The exotic dragon fruit, also known as pitahaya, originates from Central America and is also cultivated in Thailand, for example. The skin of the dragon fruit is usually red, and the flesh is white, though rarely red. Numerous small black seeds are found throughout the flesh. Dragon fruit has a very subtle, sweet, refreshing, and tropical flavor, reminiscent of strawberries or kiwis.
Fresh dragon fruit consists of about 90% water, while dried dragon fruit contains a high concentration of iron, calcium and phosphorus, as well as vitamins B, C and E.
