Hazelnuts are the fruit of the hazel shrub, which grows to about five meters tall and belongs to the birch family. Unlike peanuts or walnuts, the hazelnut is a "true" nut in the botanical sense. Hazelnuts are native to Europe and Asia Minor and now grow throughout the Northern Hemisphere. The bell-shaped, thick, woody shell encloses a single large seed, which is the edible part of the nut. The hazelnut kernel, enclosed by an equally edible, brownish seed coat, has been consumed for thousands of years due to its delicious flavor. Hazelnuts contain many unsaturated fatty acids, which provide energy, as well as plenty of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron, and calcium, along with fiber and phytochemicals. Furthermore, hazelnuts are rich in vitamin E.
