Kumquats are especially delicious when dried, as this is when their fruity-tart flavor is best developed. Lightly sweetened, they taste great in muesli or as a snack.

Kumquats, also known as dwarf oranges, are closely related to citrus fruits and originally come from Asia, but are now also found in America and Africa. Kumquats are plum-shaped, up to 5 cm long, and have a yellow-orange peel that, like lemons, is covered in many pores. The peel and seeds of the kumquat are eaten along with the pulp, with the peel having a tart-sweet flavor and the pulp a bitter-sour taste. The essential oils in the peel give kumquats a wonderful fragrance. They contain a lot of potassium and some copper and are particularly rich in vitamin C. Besides being used for decorative purposes, kumquats can be eaten raw, pickled, and in preserves.
