The sweet and sour, refreshing taste of Cape gooseberries (Physalis) is unique. Especially when dried, they offer a special taste experience, as Cape gooseberries (Physalis) are pleasantly soft to the bite and delight with their slight tartness, for example in muesli or eaten on their own. Cape gooseberries (Physalis) contain, among other things, vitamins C and B1, provitamin A, and iron.
The Cape gooseberry, also known as Physalis or, due to its South American origin, as the Andean berry, is a member of the nightshade family. The fruit received the name Cape gooseberry after its establishment in South Africa. The Cape gooseberry is known for the lantern-like "packaging" of its fruit. The orange-red, cherry-sized Cape gooseberries develop inside the calyx, with the withered petals remaining and enclosing the fruit.
